Artist STABILO Colorful Creativity

Moritz Adam Schmitt

Hi, I'm Moritz, an artist and illustrator from Cologne. My journey to becoming an illustrator wasn't a straight path, but it led me to my dream job. Drawing has been my passion for as long as I can remember. In 2007, I discovered Photoshop, which opened up new possibilities for me. I honed my skills by developing photo compositions and photo manipulations.

My goal is always the same: to trigger joy, enthusiasm, and an impetus to think, just like the best illustrations do for me. I hope my work inspires you to explore your creativity and find your own artistic voice.

Let's get started!

I'm excited to take you through my four steps to create a stunning artcycling piece with STABILO FREE Acrylic. In this project, I'll not only use the FREE Acrylic as a tool but also as a motif, filling it with intricate shapes and designs. Join me as I show you how to transform simple materials into something truly colorful and get inspired to create your own unique artwork!

Step by step

Step 1 - Concept

I first plan out the composition of the motif. For this I usually use my iPad. But you can also simply use a sheet of paper. I‘ve decided to not only use the FREE as a tool but also as a motif and then fill it with shapes, text and patterns. If you‘re not a fan of planning, you can skip this step and dive right in and have fun.

Step 2 - Material selection

Now it‘s time to choose the surface for our artwork. Acrylic markers can paint on almost any material. Whether it‘s paper, cardboard, plastic, wood – the possibilities are endless. I‘ve decided to artcycle and old pizza box for this. Just trim it down a bit for the special touch and we‘re good to go for the next step.

Step 3 - Transfer

After planning our motif and selecting the surface, we need to transfer the sketch. This can be done either traditionally by tracing the motif again with a pencil, or, in my case, using transfer paper.

Step 4 - Painting

It‘s finally time to paint. The last and most fun step. I always start with the lightes color and work my way to the darkest. In this case, it would be white, yellow, pink, red, blue and finally black. For small details and contours, I use the thinnest nib (STABILO FREE Acrylic T100). Larger areas are easier to color with the medium (STABILO FREE Acrylic T300) or large (STABILO FREE Acrylic T800C) nib. On some materials it might be necessary to apply two or more layers of paint. Finally, add some details and we‘re done!
