Environmental protection is firmly anchored in the company’s principles.
The production sites in Weißenburg, Český Krumlov and Johor Bahru are certified according to ISO 14001 environmental management and the Weißenburg site is also certified according to ISO 50001 energy management.
Since as long ago as the beginning of the 1990s, an environmental officer has been watching over how we maintain and optimise environmental protection. Savings have been achieved, for example, through improved furnace efficiency and insulation, new machine drives that use less electricity, or closed water cooling circuits. In addition, the heating system in Weißenburg has been converted to operate using gas, and equipped with a modern control and regulation system.

We produce all self-made wooden pencils from certified wood. Both FSC® and PEFC-certified wood are used for this.
STABILO was the first company in the wooden pencil industry to gain FSC® certification, in 1998. This means that we obtain a proportion of the wood used in pencil manufacture from socially responsible and environmentally aware forestry businesses. Like us, these firms are strictly monitored by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®), an international organisation that promotes the environmentally sensible use of the forests. In recent years, we have succeeded in convincing ever larger numbers of our timber suppliers to switch to FSC® production. FSC® timber may be a little more expensive to buy, but year on year we increase our use of these environmentally more valuable woods.
You’ll laugh, but: there’s a lot to be said for plastic. It’s currently the safest, best performing and most harmless material that can be used for pens. It makes them distinctively durable and also absolutely safe for children. It’s also becoming easier and easier to recycle. But we promise you: as soon as we discover an even better material, we’ll pioneer that, too.
We use the absolute minimum amount of transport packaging. Much of the packaging is used in shops as refillable displays. The individual packaging for some pens often fulfils an additional purpose as part of daily office use or at school, being used to store your pens and pencils. Of course, we are constantly on the lookout for possible improvements – we are always trying to save material, for example, and are systematically researching alternative materials.
At STABILO, our aim is to design our packaging so that it can be repurposed. As we generally only use one material in our packaging, they are easily recyclable. We are gradually converting plastic packaging to a recycled content of at least 30%.
The majority of our transport packaging is made from 80% recycled material. We stopped using PVC as early as 2012 when we began using environmentally friendly alternatives.
Every STABILO pen is a quality product with a long lifespan. And many of them are refillable. However, if your STABILO pen nevertheless reaches the end of its long life, it shouldn’t pose a problem: every part is made of environment-neutral materials and can be disposed of in normal household waste.
Many of our pens are refillable, such as our fountain pens, rollerballs, ballpoints and mechanical pencils. But did you know that the STABILO BOSS is also refillable? However, this option is actually very rarely taken advantage of. Pen tips such as those of the STABILO point 88 and STABILO Pen 68 will slowly degenerate after around 1000m of writing. The writing systems in the STABILO worker and STABILO pointVisco must be kept airtight and are thus not refillable.
